No matter what your political or religious beliefs are, there’s no denying that we could all benefit from more compassion right now—both giving it and receiving it. This exquisite, labor-intensive glass sculpture is an homage to Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion. Tradition holds that bodhisattvas are beings who have attained enlightenment, but who choose to forsake nirvana in order to help others along their own spiritual journey. Guanyin, also known as the Mercy Goddess, is among the most beloved of these divinities.
It requires intense concentration and strength to create this sculpture. The artist must wield more than 20 pounds of molten white glass on a metal rod while blowing it into a rough shape. Adding an outer layer of teal glass creates the jade-like look. Then he inserts the soft glass into a cast and continues to blow the still-hot material into the details of the mold. Finally, the glass cools for three days as it solidifies and strengthens. The final result is a work of art that is both substantial and serene. Let Guanyin’s gentle empathy inspire and recharge your spirit.
