Description
These rustic designs are handwoven of pure cotton in a textured bark weave pattern, then painted with a mixture called sadza—a thick porridge made with maize that is also a popular staple food across the African continent. The fabric is laid out to dry in the sun, then painted and cured in an oven, and finally the dried sadza is scraped off. The resist technique is similar to batik and the result is a simple, geometric pattern that wears the evidence of an artist's hand with pride. All three patterns reverse to solid back.
