Description
Huipils are the intricately handwoven blouses that many indigenous Guatemalan women wear. Blouses that have outlived their usefulness as a garment are often transformed into collectible bags, belts, table linens, and more—each are unique works of art and no two are ever the same. As with so many craft traditions, fewer women have the time and resources to devote to weaving, making these upcycled huipil crafts an increasingly rare find. Here the embroidered neckline of a vintage huipil becomes the opening of a roomy tote bag. Fully lined with three pouch pockets, leather straps, and a magnetic closure.

Please note: These handcrafted works of textile art will vary in color, pattern, and embroidery placement. Some are more floral, some are more geometric, all represent generations of talent and many hours of skill. We will choose for you, with our apologies that we cannot honor specific requests.

Beautiful Market Bag

I no longer have any of the huipiles I collected on my journeys to Guatemala, where each town had a distinctive woven or needle work design. Using this bag with it’s exquisite workmanship helps me recall that special country.
